New Massachusetts Casino Looks to Hire 3,000 Smiling Staff ahead of August 24 Opening

MGM Springfield is “pursuing [its] best effort” to make sure that 35% of its 3,000-strong workforce will be represented by Springfield residents, General Manager Alex Dixon said Thursday in a keynote address during a conference at the College of the Holy Cross.

MGM Springfield is set to open doors on August 24, or almost a month ahead of schedule. The $960-million resort will feature Massachusetts’ first full-scale commercial casino after the adoption of the state’s new gambling law in 2013 that legalized commercial Las Vegas-style gambling at up to three properties. The project represents the largest private development in Western Massachusetts.

Las Vegas casino giant MGM Resorts International is currently developing the complex in the city of Springfield. The operator has promised to create 3,000 jobs, 35% of which are set to be occupied by residents of the city and more than two-thirds are to be occupied by people from the region. About 2,200 of the resort’s staff members will be employed full-time, with average salary ranging from $40,000-$55,000, including benefits costs.

MGM Springfield’s casino floor will feature 2,500 slot machines, 94 table games, and 23 poker tables. The resort will also include a hotel, food and beverage facilities, a 44,000-square-foot meeting facility, an 8-screen movie theater, and a bowling alley, among others. More details about the different facilities at the property are to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Mr. Dixon urged conference attendees to encourage people to apply for a job at MGM Springfield and revealed what a successful candidate must possess. The official said that while it is their job to teach their employees how to deal cards and pour drinks, they cannot teach anybody how to smile, this is something a job applicant must have in themselves in order to get hired.

First Signs Installed

Workers at the property installed on Thursday the first signs that will make it possible for visitors to identify it. The ‘Hotel’ sign was the first to go up as workers hoisted it using a crane and lifts. MGM Springfield’s six-story hotel building is located along Main Street in downtown Springfield.

The installation of a second sign, a ‘MGM Springfield’ one, at the corner of Main and Howard Streets began Thursday night and was expected to be completed in the early hours of Friday.

Construction workers are set to bring up more signs in the weeks to come as preparations for the August 24 are progressing.

MGM Springfield was initially expected to open in 2017, but renovation work at the nearby Intestate-91 delayed the process, as it blocked access to the property. MGM thus decided to launch its latest property in September 2018. Last month, the company said that it was now gearing up for an August 24 grand opening of its newest resort as work on it has progressed ahead of schedule.
